Josefa’s Footprints

September 11th, 2023

Many charities recently promoted “Remember a Charity in your Will Week” which has got us thinking about life (the big thoughts!) & the footprints we leave behind…

I recently heard Josefa’s story. Josefa lives in Chimoio, Mozambique. She has 4 children and 1 grandchild and very sadly, she recently lost her husband to a short illness.

Every day is hard work for Josefa, even before becoming a single parent.

Josefa used to walk for miles to collect water from places like this

Imagine having 5 children looking up to you on a daily basis, and you know you have to walk more than 5km to get to the river and fetch dirty water. As if it is not enough, I would then have to fetch firewood to boil the water to make ok to drink.

After all this struggle, only then I could make a decent meal for my children.

Like most of you reading this, I am very lucky to have been born into a life that has safe water available, at the turn of a tap. With these basic, essential facilities; my parents were able to build more opportunities for me.

With safe water at home, Josefa is able to do the same.

You will no longer see Josefa’s footprints imprinted in the dry Mozambican sands.

Thanks to your support, she can provide for her children and give them better opportunities.

She will no longer have the daily struggle of walking for water and firewood. She doesn’t have to fight every single day. She has more hope for the future.

Access to clean water has had a remarkable impact in my life. I look smart and I look beautiful because of this water. My children and grandchild are clean and healthy because of this water. I have a decent latrine here at home because of the lessons that we were taught at community meeting. Diarrhea, eye infections and stomach pains are now a story of the past. I am forever grateful.

Safe water and sanitation doesn’t just change Josefa and her children lives now, it will impact her community for generations. This is the legacy you help create when you donate to Village Water.

By creating a will, or updating an existing will with a legacy to Village Water, you are helping create a better world, ensuring women like Josefa no longer walk for miles every day.

Why not join hundreds of others across the UK who are making or updating their will with a gift to charity. There’s not better time than the present and it’s easier to do than you might think.

What are the next steps?

  • We have partnered with Free Wills who provide free and legally-binding wills to our supporters, without visiting a solicitor or leaving your home. The process is very simple, allows you to divide your assets how you choose and leave money to charity.

There’s no obligation to leave a gift to us but we hope you will so we can continue our work. Create your free will right now.
  • Also, every March and October is Free Wills Month – your chance to get a simple Will written for free. You can take advantage of this offer if you (or your partner when writing mirror Wills) are 55 or over. Visit www.freewillsmonth.org.uk during March or October, and enter your postcode. You’ll then be able to choose a solicitor and book an appointment (which doesn’t have to take place in March or October). Appointments are limited so make sure you book early.
  • Or, get in touch with Beth our dedicated legacy contact at legacy@villagewater.org or 01743 241563, to talk through any of the information above.
