On the Ground in Zambia: Reflections from Our March 2025 Site VisitsĀ

Building Stronger ConnectionsĀ

The primary goals of the trip were to strengthen relationships between our local partners, ECHO and WATSAN, deliver training, and engage council members and local staff across the three districts where we work, enabling them to learn from and be inspired by the progress in other areas. These hub meetings are vital for sharing learning, building momentum, and maximising the impact and efficiency of the district wide plan.Ā

Highlights from the visits

  • Imana Integrated Project: Here, community members proudly showcased flourishing gardens. While challenges like seasonal flooding remain, the project’s impact is already visible at the household level, with keyhole gardens and composting practices spreading widely.Ā
  • Likuma School: Although the school was closed for a World Food Programme event, Tom met with the Headteacher. Thanks to new latrines and handwashing facilities, he reported a drop in illness-related absences.Ā Ā
  • Kitumba Community School: Meeting with the Headteacher and several students was truly inspiring. A new solar-powered water system has transformed daily life; students no longer have to walk for a kilometre to collect water. Attendance has improved, hygiene is better, and morale is high. Some students shared how access to water and participation in MHM (Menstrual Hygiene Management) clubs have positively impacted their lives.Ā

Community VoicesĀ Ā

Ā At every site, community members expressed heartfelt gratitude. In Imana village, a moving speech from the local headman called for an expansion of the integrated project. It’s clear that our work is not just providing basic services, it’s building hope.Ā

Challenges and Lessons LearnedĀ Ā

While the trip was overwhelmingly positive, challenges remain. Nalolo’s sandy terrain complicates logistics, and high iron content in the water poses risks for quality and system longevity.Ā

Looking AheadĀ

Tom visit left us more committed than ever to our goal. Seeing the tangible improvements in schools and communities makes every challenge worthwhile. As we strengthen our partnerships and build on what’s working, we’re excited about what’s to come and confident we can achieve even greater impact together.Ā
