Building Sustainable Futures: Village Water’s WASH Carbon Reduction Project

In a world grappling with water scarcity and climate change, finding sustainable solutions is not just essential—it’s urgent. Village Water, alongside partners CO2 Balance, WATSAN Mozambique, and ECHO Zambia, embarked on an innovative journey to tackle these challenges head-on. Our project isn’t just about repairing water points; it’s about creating a ripple effect of positive change that transforms communities across rural Africa.

A Tale of Impact

Since its launch in 2019, our project has been more than just about fixing water points; it’s been a lifeline for over a million people. With 3,636 water points repaired across four provinces in Mozambique and Zambia over the past 5 years, we’ve reached more people than we could ever have imagined. But it doesn’t end there. Recognising the importance of ongoing maintenance, we’ve also monitored and conducted 1,473 re-repairs on these waterpoints, ensuring the water keeps flowing for the communities who rely on them.

Empowering Communities

At the core of our project lies a deep commitment to community empowerment. With our reach extending to 1,325,586 people, we haven’t just provided access to safe water; we’ve equipped individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to thrive. Through annual hygiene and sanitation sessions, we’re not just preventing waterborne diseases—we’re fostering healthier, more resilient communities. That’s 204,000 families that enjoy a safer, healthier more productive life.

Ensuring Quality

Ensuring the quality and sustainability of our water sources is non-negotiable. That’s why we leave no stone unturned. Rigorous annual water quality tests and quarterly monitoring efforts are our way of ensuring that the water flowing from our repaired points is not just safe but sustainable for the long haul. It’s about safeguarding the health and well-being of communities today and for generations to come.

Harnessing Data, Driving Change

In today’s digital age, data is a powerful catalyst for change. That’s why we’ve embraced a data-driven approach to our project. By collecting and analysing vast amounts of data on water pump lifecycles and intervention impacts, we’re not just fine-tuning our strategies—we’re maximising our impact. It’s about changing more lives, more effectively, and leaving no one behind.

Measuring Success

Our success isn’t just measured in repaired water points or reduced carbon emissions—it’s measured in changed lives and brighter futures. By significantly reducing waterborne diseases and alleviating the burden on healthcare systems, we’re not just making an impact—we’re shaping a more sustainable, equitable world. And as we look ahead, the possibilities are endless.

Our project stands as a testament to the power of collective action and the transformative potential of the projects we deliver. But our journey doesn’t end here. We’ll continue to innovate, collaborate, and find new ways to fund change in the communities that need it most. Because together, we’re not just repairing water points—we’re building sustainable futures.
