Project Update - Advancing Sustainable Agriculture

Launched in 2024, the project is part of our wider commitment to improve livelihoods in the communities we work in. Our aim is not just to meet immediate needs, but to build long-lasting, community-driven solutions that equip people with the tools and knowledge to help them continue to thrive. Village Water is working with local farmers, community leaders, and in-country partners to ensure that change is meaningful and sustainable.Â
Our project focuses on four main pillars to empower local smallholder farmers and their communities:Â
Training in Keyhole Gardening Techniques – Community members are learning innovative, water-efficient gardening methods that maximise land use and support year-round food production. As part of this process, they use raised beds (pictured below) to compost food waste and germinate seeds. Once the seedlings are strong enough, they are transferred to the keyhole gardens, where they can flourish in nutrient-rich, moisture-conserving soil.Â
Improved Water Access – Reliable access to safe water is the backbone of productive agriculture. For this reason, we installed a 10,000-liter water tank and a solar-powered irrigation pump. This setup ensures a steady and renewable water supply to support farming activities, even during dry seasons.Â
Boosting Agricultural Productivity – With efficient irrigation and sustainable gardening practices, farmers can now maintain productive plots throughout the year. These innovations are already increasing crop yields, enhancing food security and reducing dependence on unpredictable weather patterns.Â
Empowering Local Livelihoods – By promoting self-sufficiency in food production and enabling surplus sales, the project supporting economic opportunities and improving the wellbeing of the whole community and can allocate some of this extra income to support the operation and maintenance of their water system.Â

This integrated approach is already making a meaningful impact by supporting farmers to build more resilient livelihoods through sustainable agriculture and reliable access to water.Â
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow together. Â
